Moise Niyonzima, an alumni of the ACES Visual Storytelling Course explains this photo: “On a busy street in Kigali, a man balances a heavy sack of green bananas on his head, navigating the slick pavement and the flow of bicycles, motorcycles, and pedestrians. I was drawn to the quiet determination of this everyday moment, one person carrying a vital Rwandan staple through the rhythm of city life, even as the seasonal rains begin to fall.

While it is currently the rainy season, the movement of bananas from the countryside to the capital never stops. As the most consumed fruit in Rwanda, they play a central role in daily meals and local economies year-round. Yet the crop remains fragile, often threatened by disease and the challenges of transport in unpredictable weather, reminding us how closely food security, livelihood, and resilience are intertwined.”

Moise’s work, along with the work of all CCN photography students, is available in the CCN Media Library. Developed in collaboration with the London-based agency Panos Pictures, this curated, open-access collection brings the work of CCN-trained photographers to the attention of major international media outlets.
