The Africa Centre of Excellence of Sustainable Cooling and Cold-chain (ACES) seeks an experienced researcher who will support diverse international research teams and experts by reviewing, improving, and implementing data collection tools and processes.

Position Overview

They will perform robust data analyses, help interpret results, and create compelling visualisations to generate actionable insights that inform strategic decision-making in designing and delivering cold-chain interventions.

The candidate will engage in various work streams within ACES and the Clean Cooling Network (CCN), including:

  • Cold-chain Technology Innovation & Demonstration
  • Cold-chain System Design & Modelling
  • Cold-chain Finance & Business Models
  • Cold-chain Policy & Thought Leadership
  • Cold-chain One Health Cold-Chains
  • Cold-chain Training & Capacity Building
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Review and refine both quantitative and qualitative data collection tools (e.g., surveys, interviews, digital platforms, etc.).
  • Develop standard Operating Procedures to ensure consistent data collection quality.
  • Clean, validate, and transform data sets to ensure accuracy and facilitate comprehensive analysis.
  • Conduct statistical analysis (descriptive, hypothesis testing, regression, etc.) using standard tools including but not limited to SPSS, R, Python, Stata etc.
  • Create and manage interactive data visualisations and dashboards (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Document analytical procedures and maintain high standards for data quality, integrity, security, and ethical compliance as per ACES protocols.
  • Carry out programming analytics using Python, R, or other data science programming languages.
  • Conduct qualitative data analysis to draw insights.
  • Draft technical reports and contribute to academic publications.
  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with ACES and the CCN teams and experts to support comprehensive and timely data analysis for various projects.
Skills & Experience

Minimum Bachelor's degree required; MSc or Ph.D. preferred, in Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Econometrics, or related data analysis applied field, or equivalent experience. Candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in data analysis/analytics, research, or monitoring & evaluation.
  • Successfully completed at least 3-5 complex data analysis projects involving large, diverse datasets.
  • Previous understanding of logistics, cold-chain or food systems is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in quality review of data collection tools and survey design.
  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative and qualitative research methods and analysis.
  • Big data analysis is a plus.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in statistical and analytical software packages (e.g., SPSS, R, Python, SPSS, Stata, Excel, etc.).
  • Familiarity with digital data collection platforms and quality assurance processes (e.g., ODK, SurveyCTO, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver complex, large-scale analytical projects efficiently and within deadlines.
  • Strong Excel and SQL skills.
  • Proven technical and scientific writing capabilities.
  • Expertise in storytelling through data, including visualisation (using tools, e.g., Tableau, Power BI, etc.) and narrative reporting.
  • Proficiency in Data-Driven Decision Making.
  • Ability to carry out analytics on established key performance indicators to inform monitoring and track progress.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data security, privacy practices, and ethical standards.
